Challenge
STADTRADELN is one of Germany's most successful climate protection campaigns. Municipalities and their citizens cycle for 21 days to promote climate action — teams are formed, kilometres collected, and cities compete in a friendly race. What started as a local initiative has become a nationwide movement with thousands of participating municipalities and hundreds of thousands of active cyclists.
The challenge was enormous: build a system that works simultaneously for individuals, teams, municipal administrations, and campaign organisers — all while remaining scalable during peak usage periods with tens of thousands of concurrent users.
Our Services
We developed the complete digital infrastructure from the ground up:
Web Platform (stadtradeln.de): Built with modern web technologies — PHP backend and a reactive Vue.js frontend for a dynamic user experience. The platform enables municipality registration, cyclist sign-up, team formation, and offers comprehensive analytics and rankings.
Native Mobile Apps: For iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin/Java), featuring GPS tracking for automatic kilometre logging, offline functionality, and seamless synchronisation with the web platform. Push notifications motivate participants and keep them informed about team achievements.

Solution
The architecture is built for scalability — during peak phases, the system processes millions of kilometres and handles tens of thousands of concurrent users. The platform is continuously evolved to integrate new features such as the RADar! reporting platform and the BIKE MONITOR.
A sophisticated campaign management system allows municipalities to individually configure and manage their STADTRADELN events. The RESTful API ensures seamless data exchange between web and mobile platforms.
